IT is 1961 and king of television Graham Kennedy is celebrating the 1000th episode of In Melbourne Tonight.
Pictured with Kennedy are beaming cast members, including Philip Brady, who is still in the entertainment business as a 3AW broadcaster.
The photo, from the Herald Sun archive, betrays a certain innocence as we see a youthful Kennedy and his group of clean-cut colleagues enjoying a milestone in what was still the early days of TV.
But the 1960s was to become one of the most turbulent decades in Australian history as the country was dragged into the Vietnam War and youth culture underwent a revolution.
Among this collection of Swinging Sixties photos is a reproduction of a 1964 front page from The Sun that featured the momentous arrival of the Beatles in town.
Another picture from a year later shows the Rolling Stones pictured happily with some local DJs.
Vietnam was a constant presence in the second half of the decade, as dramatically illustrated by a shot of a paint-spattered security guard for US President Lyndon Johnson, who attracted anti-war protesters during a visit in 1966.
Other memorable highlights included model Jean Shrimpton, who scandalised the Melbourne Cup crowd at Flemington with her miniskirt.
