DAY two of Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival was just as dramatic off the catwalk as it was on it.
Georgia May Jagger arrived in Australia yesterday morning to take to the runway in the Camilla show, but was instead met with the news her father Mick’s long-term partner L’Wren Scott had been found dead.
GRIEF-STRICKEN JAGGER BREAKS HIS SILENCE
Scott, 49, a highly celebrated model and designer, who has dressed good friend Nicole Kidman in her pieces for red carpet events including Melbourne Derby Day in 2012, is believed to have committed suicide and was found inside her apartment in Chelsea around 10am local time (1am AEDT).
The news was broken Jagger when she landed in Sydney with boyfriend Josh McLellan.
Designer Camilla Franks said yesterday Georgia May was devastated and resting ahead of jumping back on a flight to New York late last night.
“We’re all in shock right now and all our hearts and love and energy are going to Georgia and her beautiful family during this tragic time,” says Franks.
“Georgia has been a part of our family; I wish I could just give her a cuddle.”
“We lost Charlotte Dawson a couple of weeks ago and now this, it’s just awful.”
Franks had created two custom designer looks for Georgia May to open and close the glamour show in.
David Jones Youth Ambassador Montana Cox was yesterday fitted for the show and will walk in place of Georgia in tonight’s large scale fashion production which will include a performance by the Victorian Symphony Orchestra.
The news of Scott’s passing was felt among the local fashion set who kicked off day two’s proceedings with an elegant breakfast at Tiffany.
Enjoying New York style pretzels with a side of diamonds, designers, models and fashion writers gathered for the annual Tiffany Designer Award presentation which honours the best designer in the country who are in their first five years of business.
Victorian design duo Strateas. Carlucci took out the coveted Tiffany & Co Australian Designer Award.
The label, established in Paris only two years ago by Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci, has already garnered international attention.
“We made that choice in this economic climate (to launch in Paris) to explore that world over there,” Carlucci says.
Sharp tailoring, innovative fabrics and bridging the gap between luxurious and wearable fashion has seen the label flourish.
Graeme Lewsey, VAMFF CEO, says the competition this year was the stiffest ever with Bul, Christina Exie, Haryono Setiadi, Livia Arena and Pageant also up for the award.
As the sun set over the Docklands Strateas. Carlucci showcased their new season styles during the The Miss Vogue runway which also celebrated the designer collections from Bassike, Maticevski, Scanlan Theodore, Willow, Josh Goot and Christopher Esber in an energetic catwalk.
Trends included monochrome colour blocking, sports-luxe styles and dramatic tailoring.
Stand outs from the showcase included Willow’s hailspot dresses and Maticevski’s colour palette of powdered lilac and vanilla.
Fashion week then took flight at the Mimco show with a runway homage to Hitchcock’s The Birds.
The Melbourne accessory label showcased their new season collection inspired by the leading ladies of Hitchcock films with models emerging from a large gilt birdcage.
Mimco creative Director Cathryn Wills described the catwalk as a sensory overload, with the brand transporting the audience with sound, touch and taste.
Melbourne-born model-of-the-moment Paris Roberts has returned from New York this week to walk exclusively in the Mimco parade.
Roberts, the face of the Mimco’s new season collection, said this season’s accessory trends were bold and dramatic.
“There is a lot of layering and a lot of intense colour and unexpected combinations,” she said.
The final runway of the night was a stunning visual feast of fresh floral blooms which saw Australia’s red carpet darlings steal the sartorial spotlight.
The Instyle show, lead by Aurelio Costarella, Rachel Gilbert, Thurley and Melbourne’s Mariana Hardwick’s ready-to-wear label Hardwick revealed a return to ladylike sophistication, but with a modern edge.
Lace, exquisite embellishment, soft luxurious leather and swathes of silk created collections that covered both decorative daywear and night time elegance.
Trelise Cooper, Megan Park, Kate Sylvester and Easton Pearson showcased a rich patchwork of textures and prints including beaded embellishment, embroidery and leather.
