THERE'S a lot of pressure that comes with being the Music Man at an AFL club.

North Melbourne's resident DJ Jack Ziebell explains.

"Whoever tries to do it, they get put off pretty quickly because everyone teases them so fast and so hard," Ziebell said.

"They tease me as well, but I don't really care, I cop it on the chin. I'm resilient, I just push through it."

Ziebell is in charge of the Roos' pre-game playlist, which usually lasts 90 minutes.

"So if we play bad it's my fault and if we play well it's my fault as well," he said, laughing.

"It's a fair bit of pressure...I'm very careful about what goes on there.

"There's a balance. It varies from a bit of chill-out music, like Jack Johnson, through RnB, a bit of pop and a bit of house. There's actually a bit of everything on there.''

At Hawthorn, Ben Stratton is in charge.

Hawks defender Josh Gibson often listens to his own tunes through headphones on match day, but he said Stratton had impressed.

"He's very good, the boys love his stuff," Gibson said.

"If you keep getting good feedback you get to rock up again."

But Gibson said there was always the danger of being demoted was ever-present.

"I remember back at North, if we used to lose it used to change hands because we'd always blame it on the playlist," Gibson said.

"I guess we've won 11, 12 in a row so Stratts is doing a good job."

At the start of the year Ziebell has about 10 songs on the list and week by week, it grows.

There's Kanye West's 'Dark Fantasy', house tune 'Let It Out' by Jono Fernandez and Pauls Paris, Aussie crowd pleasers Temper Trap, rap royalty Jay Z and Eminem and Aussie upstart Flume.

Even Semisonic's 1998 hit 'Closing Time' gets a run.

"There's a couple of old blokes in the side like Boomer and Drewy, they've got to listen to some old stuff,"Ziebell said.

Stratton also caters to varying tastes.

"Brent Guerra gets his favourite song on there, which is 'Horses' by Daryl Braithwaite, that always comes out at the end of the game," Gibson said.

"It's a mixture of any sort of doof-doof to a bit of Lil Wayne, ASAP Rocky, all the hip hop stuff and Stratt's euro stuff, wherever he gets it from.

"He's actually got some DJ decks at home so I'm not surprised if he's actually mixing them up himself in his spare time."

Ziebell outs Kangaroos captain Andrew Swallow for questionable taste in music - with Take 40 a favourite on his iPod - but Ziebell admits he's made a few mistake in his time in charge.

"I really got booed for putting Miley Cyrus on the play list in my early days," Ziebell said.
