Melbourne residents are being asked to protect themselves and their homes against damaging winds lashing the city.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast strong northerly winds of about 60km/h, gusting up to 100km/h in metropolitan Melbourne and southern Victoria on Thursday.
Senior forecaster Terry Ryan said the high parts of outer Melbourne, including the Dandenongs, Kinglake and the Mornington Peninsula, will be particularly prone to strong wind gusts on Thursday.
State Emergency Service received eight requests for assistance overnight and this could rise when the winds picked up later on Thursday, spokesman Toby Borella said.
"Now is an opportunity to have a look at your property and secure any loose items, such as outdoor settings, trampolines and things like that," he said.
"And with driving conditions be aware of any fallen trees or power lines."
