Accused Victorian killer wants Melbourne trial - Ninemsn

A man accused of murdering a baby during a burglary in central Victoria wants his upcoming trial moved to Melbourne because of publicity on the case.

Harley Hicks, 20, of North Bendigo, has been committed to stand trial for the murder of Zayden Veal at a Bendigo home on June 15 last year.

But his barrister David Hallowes told the Victorian Supreme Court on Monday that he will apply to have the trial heard in Melbourne.

Mr Hallowes said he was concerned about local publicity about the murder case.

Prosecutor Michele Williams SC said the Crown would oppose the application because 52 witnesses to be called at trial were from Bendigo.

The application will be heard in Melbourne on December 16.
