Major gas leak in Melbourne's north contained, police say - ABC Online

An area in Melbourne's north is now safe after a gas leak earlier today forced a shutdown of nearby shops.

A gas main ruptured near the train station on Pascoe Vale Road about 8:30am (AEST).

Shops were evacuated in Glenroy, while Pascoe Vale Road was closed between Western Ring Road and Glenroy Road but was expected to open soon.

Shop owner Elie El Zaibak, whose store was shut down for the leak, said his sister was at the shop when the gas pipe ruptured.

"She went out to have a quick look to see what was going on, because the police had cornered off the block pretty quick," he said.

"She popped her head out and she could see a big gas leak coming out of the ground. And smell it, it was in the air."
