Melbourne Heart have confirmed they have sacked coach John Aloisi two years into a three-year contract after the club's 1-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix.

In a statement on Sunday morning, the club said the decision came following a meeting of the club's board which concluded that a decision to terminate Aloisi's contract as coach was in the Heart's best interests.

“John has been an absolute professional at our Club; as an inaugural player, as a coach of our National Youth League side and as Head Coach of our Hyundai A-League team,” Chairman Peter Sidwell said.

“No one can question his professionalism while at Melbourne Heart FC, nor his significant contribution to this Club since its inception. I have spoken with John and he was gracious and understood the Club’s decision.

“We have the greatest respect for the commitment he made to Melbourne Heart FC and the dignified manner in which he has carried himself through a difficult period.

"We wish John and his family the best for the future and thank him for his valuable contribution to our Club.”

The Heart expect to name an interim coach ahead of the game against Central Coast Mariners in Gosford next Sunday.

Pressure had been mounting on Aloisi as the club made a terrible start to the season.

The Heart is winless in 12 games in 2013/14, and has gone a total of 17 games without an A-League win, since a win over Sydney FC in February.

The club is anchored to the bottom of the table on just four points, six points behind Wellington and Adelaide.

Following the Heart's loss to the Phoenix on Friday night at AAMI Park , Aloisi claimed his team had played "scared" and dubbed the performance as "not good enough", but denied suggestions he would resign from his post.

His record as coach in 39 games with the Heart is eight wins, seven draws and 24 losses.

Meanwhile the board of the Heart is trying to negotiate a sale of the club to a New Zealand consortium.
