England have surrendered the Ashes in just 14 days and are now playing for pride in the fourth Test at Melbourne.
The Boxing Day Test is one of the most evocative events in sport and England have good memories of the ground, winning there last time to retain the urn.
That cannot happen this time, of course, bit they will be keen to avoid a whitewash so psychologically, victory at Melbourne is crucial.
Michael Clarke is Australia's sole survivor from the 5-0 series of 2006-07 and he would dearly love to do that again to England.
And with Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris in full flight, you would not bet against the Aussies.
England's calamitous tour got even worse in between the third and fourth Tests as Graeme Swann retired from cricket and left the party early.
That gave a chance to Monty Panesar to show he is Englan'd premier spinner, while Ben Stokes will also be looking to impress after his second-innings century at the WACA.
The tourists will not glean the level of satisfaction from victory as they did in 2006 when Tim Bresnan took the final wicket but it would be a morale boost and after the many misfortunes Down Under, that is about all they could hope for.
Melbourne record
England wins: 20
Australia wins: 27
Draws: 7
STAT ATTACK: The first ever Test match, between England and Australia, took place at the MCG in March 1877. England lost by 45 runs.
Limbering up: Monty Panesar stretches in the nets ahead of the fourth Test in Melbourne
