Salmonella

A salmonella outbreak has been linked to a Brisbane catering company.

One woman has died and hundreds of others have reported illness after a salmonella outbreak linked to a Brisbane catering company.

The company, which has not been named by Queensland Health or the Metro North Hospital and Health Service, provided the catering for 40 different Melbourne Cup functions last week.

At least 220 people have reported being sick and a 77-year-old woman's death has been linked to the food poisoning outbreak.

The exact source of the salmonella has not yet been determined but Metro North Public Health Unit Director Dr Susan Vlack urged anyone who was worried to see their doctor.

Symptoms, which include fever, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and vomiting, usually present within six to 72 hours after exposure.
