Police say West Melbourne sexual assault not related to laneway attack - Herald Sun

A WOMAN was stalked and indecently assaulted two days before a young mum was violently raped just 800m away in North Melbourne.

A female victim was walking along Stanley St towards Chetwynd St, West Melbourne, just before 6.30am on June 28, when she was attacked.

While the attack bears similarities to a brutal rape two days later, just 800m away, police said the cases were not believed to be related.

While she was crossing Chetwynd St, she saw a man walking north along the street.

As the woman then went to enter a nearby business premises, she felt a tap on her shoulder and saw the same man.

The man then indecently assaulted the woman, who then screamed, and the man ran north along Chetwynd St.

Police say the violent rape of a woman who was dragged into a laneway in North Melbourne, where she was punched, kicked and sexually assaulted on June 30, just two days later, was unrelated.

The man was perceived to be of Caucasian appearance, about 25, around 165cm with a slim build, medium complexion, black wavy hair and unshaven.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
