INTERNATIONAL conglomerate Godolphin Racing has strong ties with Australia through its association with jockey Kerrin McEvoy and its never-ending pursuit of the Melbourne Cup.
The global giant has been a regular visitor to our shores in a 14-year quest to win the Melbourne Cup, one of the few great races in the world to elude the stable.
It has been close on many occasions, with three runners-up - Central Park (1999), Give The Slip (2001) and Crime Scene (2009). Another runner, Beekeeper, finished third behind Media Puzzle in 2002.
In 2008 the global giant enjoyed its biggest success in Australia when it won the Caulfield Cup with All The Good, a result the stable said was deeply satisfying and described at the time by racing manager Simon Crisford as "mega".
Some of the stable's other big wins in Australia include Hatha Anna (2001) and Fantastic Love (2004) in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington.
Godolphin's association McEvoy has been far more fruitful, with McEvoy riding 121 winners for the superpower, including seven Group 1 wins, during a six-year stint.
McEvoy first came under Godolphin's notice after winning the Melbourne Cup on Brew in 2000.
But it was his ride on Beekeeper that played a significant role in him joining Godolphin as understudy to flamboyant Italian jockey Frankie Dettori. McEvoy ended his overseas contract in 2008 and now rides in Sydney.
Godolpin first started its operation in 1994 and has training facilities in both Dubai and Newmarket, the epicentre of the developing controversy where 11 horses have tested positive to anabolic steriods.
The stable registered its 100th Group 1 win with Sulamani in the 2003 Arlington Million and since then has doubled that number around the globe.
