The AFL is furious with the Melbourne Football Club following the latest drugs scandal revelations linking the club to Stephen Dank.

3AW Football panellist Mike Sheahan says that keeping the AFL in the dark about this has angered the league.

“The AFL are furious with Melbourne because they were blindsided by this,” Sheahan said on 3AW Football.

“They hate being blindsided. They gave all the clubs an opportunity to reveal what had happened in the past. Nothing came from Melbourne.”

Sheahan also says that Dr Dan Bates, who has stood down as the club doctor pending an investigation, will not return to the club, even though he was not the only one who knew about this.

“My view is there was a lot more than the doctor who knew what was happening,” Sheahan said.

The other names who he thinks may have been aware of the situation are Neil Craig (Director of Coaching), Dave Misson (Elite Performance Manager) and Josh Mahoney (Football Manager).

Former Richmond superstar and 3AW expert Matthew Richardson says he is sick of hearing Stephen Dank’s name and wonders why he can’t co-operate with ASADA, rather than coming up in the media at different times.

“Why do we keep hearing of Stephen Dank’s text messages through the 730 report?” Richardson asked.

“Why is he turning this into the affair that’ it’s turning into? Why doesn’t he just co-operate? I don’t understand it.”

Brian Taylor agreed, saying he has left a bad image for the game.

“The damage that has been done by this guy. (He) has left a sour taste in many people’s minds.”” Taylor said.

Leigh Matthews, a great of the game in both playing and coaching believes that as competitors, players and coaches should be looking for anything to give themselves an edge, providing it is in the rules. He explained the way he thought when he was in the inner sanctum as a coach and player.

“You would try and find any way of being 1000ths of a per cent better… The game is about winning and losing ultimately,” he explained.

“You’ve got to do it within the rules otherwise you’re going to get punished, on and off the field that’s clearly the case. But if you’re talking ethics and morality it’s about doing everything we can to be the best we can.”

Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd thinks that if Dank has had the players in the dark about the supplements, it is a shocking crime.

“We just hope that he’s given the players what they think they were getting,” Lloyd said.

“If he hasn’t that is just about the biggest crime you could ever commit.”
