The man, 37, was arrested at his Spotswood home on Monday morning and is being interviewed by police.
The driver was filling his taxi at a petrol station in Spotswood when the man, wearing an Essendon AFL jersey, began kicking the car and striking it with a windscreen cleaner in the early hours of Sunday morning.
When the taxi driver challenged the man he knocked the driver to the ground, kicked him in the head and continued assaulting him until he was unconscious.
The offender continued to damage the taxi, then fled.
The taxi driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police are hunting this man after a brutal attack on a taxi driver.
