AN 18-year-old woman has been questioned over the discovery of a dead baby left on a Melbourne footpath.
Police say the newborn was found in St Albans, in the city's west.
A family member reported the death to police at 3pm yesterday.
Officers arrived at Ruth Street in St Albans and found the newborn's body.
The homicide squad is investigating the circumstances of the death and interviewed an 18-year-old St Albans woman last evening.
No-one has been arrested or charged.
Detectives are also waiting on the results of a post mortem examination.
A police spokeswoman said there likely wouldn't be an update on the investigation until later today.
It is not known if the baby is a boy or girl or what relationship, if any, the questioned teenager has with the child.
Investigators want to hear from anyone who saw unusual activity in the Ruth Street area during the past week to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
