THE cha-ching of cash registers will give way to the sweeter sounds of some of the state’s best musicians in the Bourke St mall this weekend.

On Saturday night, as part of White Night Melbourne, bands playing genres from boogie and swing to a cappella and ska will take the stage from 7pm until dawn.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to flood into the city for the second all-night cultural festival featuring performance, giant art and family entertainment.

This year’s program includes more than 100 events across eight city blocks, running from the Melbourne City Baths to the National Gallery of Victoria.

Creative director Andrew Walsh said he hoped to out-surprise visitors to last year’s event with an even more unusual program of local and international work.

“Melbourne likes this sort of event and embraces it,” he said. “If you look at the cities where White Night works best around the world, it is in cities like Melbourne; Paris, Toronto, Sao Paulo.”

To transport punters in and out of the city, more than 370 extra train and tram services will operate, as well as Nightrider buses leaving the city every 30 minutes.

Extra bus and taxi hubs will be set up in Exhibition and Queen streets and trams will run from Queensberry St and St Kilda Rd.
