A major manhunt is underway for a double killer after a Melbourne couple were found stabbed to death in their suburban home on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say workmates of 60-year-old Cheryl Adamson came to her Murrumbeena home on Wednesday when she didn't show up for work.

They found her body and the body of her 65-year-old husband, Robert, inside the back of the home at 12:45pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McIntyre says both had been viciously assaulted with a knife, or possibly some kind of blunt weapon.

He said there were “no obvious signs” of forced entry and “no evidence” the couple was involved in a murder-suicide.

"It is quite a brutal scene," he told reporters outside the home.

"We don't know what is behind these two deaths,"

“They’ve both been assaulted. It’d appear there may have been a weapon used."

Neighbours say the couple had been living there for 40 years, and described them as a "loving couple".

“It’s just devastating,” said Colleen Hemming, who added that the devoted couple were always willing to lend a hand to those in need.

“No one deserves to die like this.”

Neighbour Ted Fentiman said he last spoke to Robert on Tuesday after walking his dog.

“It’s a big shock to anybody to come home and find your neighbours have died,” he said.

“Rob and Cheryl were a lovely couple. I can’t imagine who would’ve possibly done this.”

It's believed their son may have been staying there but he wasn't home on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Police have spoken with him but stressed he is not a suspect.

“He’s assisting us with our inquiries,” Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said.

“At this point he is not a suspect.”

There were no obvious signs of a break-in, and no evidence the deaths were a murder-suicide, police said.

Detectives have never been to the home before.

A park was searched across from the suburban home just before rain set in.
