A WOMAN believed murdered in her apartment in inner Melbourne may have known her killer, police say.
A neighbour discovered the body of 69-year-old Jeanette Moss in her Middle Park home at about 10.45am (AEDT) on Wednesday.
Police are treating the death as suspicious.
Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter said police knew how she was killed but had not yet released the information.
"We believe she has been killed inside the apartment," Det Insp Potter told Fairfax radio.
"She may have known her killer because you need to buzz into the apartment block, but the security doors are routinely left unlocked."
He said there was no sign of forced entry into the apartment but a key had been left outside.
Insp Potter said Ms Moss was a well-known and popular resident.
Police have ruled out the possibility that the death was a robbery gone wrong, as no items were stolen from the property.
A neighbour was going to take Ms Moss to a doctor's appointment but she never showed up, and later discovered the body.
Ms Moss was last seen running errands and doing some shopping on Tuesday morning in the local area in her green BMW.
It is likely she was killed between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, Det Insp Potter said.
"If anyone in the area remembers any suspicious activity around the apartment building last week, it's important that they share that information with us," he said.
Police would like to speak with anyone who saw Ms Moss in the hours leading up to her death.
An information caravan will be run by police on Tuesday outside Ms Moss's home from 11.30am to 6.30pm (AEDT) in the search for more clues.
