TRAVELLERS are facing frustrating delays at Melbourne Airport this evening as wild weather causes havoc along the east coast.
Half a dozen flights to Sydney have been cancelled and many more have been delayed by up to an hour, with only one runway operating at Sydney Airport.
Strong winds whipped through Sydney this afternoon, with gusts at the airport reaching almost 100km/h at about 3.30pm this afternoon.
Qantas flights from Melbourne to Sydney at 5.30pm, 7.45pm, 8pm and 8.20pm have been cancelled, as well as Virgin flights at 5.45pm and 6.15pm.
Delays are expected to continue throughout the night as airports along the east coast try to clear the backlog of flights affected by the weather.
Qantas spokeswoman Sharna Rhys-Jones said lightning was forecast for Melbourne which would cause further issues.
"(That) will impact our operations as airport staff aren't allowed to go on to the tarmac when there is lightning," she said.
Poor weather in Brisbane and Darwin this afternoon also caused delays to some flights.
