NEIGHBOURS heard yelling and a man scream "I've stabbed her" before police found a woman's body in Melbourne.
Police say the 38-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck following a domestic dispute in a Prahran unit about 12.45am (AEDT) on Thursday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said a man called police to report a woman had been stabbed and died.
When police arrived they arrested a 44-year-old man and found the woman's body on the lounge room floor of the man's unit.
The North African woman, who has a nine-year-old daughter, had known the man about a month, said Det Sen Sgt Bailey.
"There have been some witnesses come forward to say they heard some yelling and a male call out, 'I've stabbed her'," he told reporters at the scene.
"It's not a random attack. We believe they've had a domestic dispute and as a result this poor female has been fatally wounded."
He said police believed the woman was stabbed with a knife.
The arrested man, who is known to police, is likely to be charged later on Thursday.
