TRAIN operator Metro says peak trains are back to normal after a burst water main earlier flooded Melbourne Central station.

Metro said it believed the water leak was coming from the shopping centre above the city station.

Water was leaking onto platforms 1 and 2, meaning the station had been closed since this morning as a safety precaution.

Mr Hoare said Metro apologised for any inconvenience.

"We have done exhaustive testing, we have been at it since 6am, we have not found any leaks whatsoever on Metro property so at this stage we have ruled that out completely.

"In terms of the leak and where it is coming from it is almost certainly coming from upstairs somewhere in that retail level.

"There is a possibility it is in a pipe that we can't see and which is related to this building being very old and it might be hidden from us."

Melbourne Central general manager Justin Shannon said 12 shops in the lower ground food court had been closed while investigations into the source of the leak continued.

"They will be closed until we continue to investigate the cause of the leak,'' Mr Shannon said.

He said it was continuing to work with Metro in regards to the cause of the leak.

"We have been cooperating with them since 6am this morning and have assisted them in getting the station reopen for the afternoon commute.

"We can't give you a definite answer as to whether the leak is in Melbourne Central property or in the train station because we haven't yet found the cause of the leak.

"It is more than business as usual. We have actually got our one day shopping festival on today. We will be open until 10pm tonight.''
