Unseasonable snowfall is forecast for the mountains around Melbourne on Thursday morning in what the weather bureau has called a "good burst of winter" in the middle of spring.

A cold front moving across the south-west of the state reached Melbourne shortly after midnight and is expected to push through the central and eastern parts of the state throughout the day.

Snow showers are forecast for Mount Hotham and across the Victorian alpine region in the morning and afternoon.

There is also a chance of hail in the morning and early afternoon. Wind gusts are expected to top 40km/h in alpine areas.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster James Taylor said there was also a good chance of sleet and snow up until midday on Thursday across higher parts of the Dandenong Ranges and Mount Baw Baw in the east.

"It's spring in Melbourne ... it's always weird weather," Mr Taylor said.

"It will be a very interesting day.

"The wind gusts will be of some concern but we will be watching that very closely."

Mr Taylor said there would also be a chance of thunderstorms in Melbourne on Thursday, where temperatures were expected to hover near 15 degrees.

"There will be reasonable rain over the eastern suburbs and some places could get up around 15 millimetres," Mr Taylor said.
