Artists have redesigned a number of Melbourne trams - ABC Local

Some of Victoria's most talented artists have taken to several Melbourne trams, turning them into mobile murals.

Eight trams have been repainted and will run on different routes as part of next week's Melbourne Festival.

The project is a reimagining of an idea that began in Melbourne in the 70s, that saw some of the country's most renowned artists designing the city's W-class trams.

This morning, the Melbourne Festival's creative director, Josephine Ridge, unveiled one of the redesigned trams.

"To once again be able to bring art on to the iconic Melbourne tram and on to the streets is really a fantastic initiative." she said.

The tram design by pop painter, Jon Campbell, will be the first to hit the city circle tracks this week.
