THE music of Doctor Who will be performed in a spectacular concert in Melbourne next year.

After sold-out shows last year, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular returns to Melbourne on January 31 and February 1 for performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The show is based on the recent Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Proms in the UK, according to BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand spokeswoman Helen Pendlebury.

"With Doctor Who celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, all eyes are on the Doctor," Pendlebury says.

The show features Murray Gold's music from the hit series, accompanied by a big screen to show specially edited sequences of Matt Smith's performance as the 11th Doctor.

A host of monsters including the spine-chilling Silence and Daleks and Cybermen will add to the atmosphere.

The show will feature all-new content, including a look back at some of the previous doctors and also some of the music from the past five decades, as well as performances of some audience favourites from the 2012 show.

Gold has worked on the series since it was re-invented in 2005 and won its way into the hearts of a whole new generation of Doctor Who fans.

"It's really special to be able to offer audiences the chance to experience this music as it was originally recorded," Gold says.

"We worked with a symphonic orchestra on both the iconic theme tune and the rest of the series score and to hear the music performed by such world-class orchestras as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is a fantastic opportunity for music lovers and Doctor Who fans alike."

The show will also be performed in Queensland.
