ALBURY Gold Cup winner Niblick is back in work at the Brett Cavanough stables ahead of a possible Melbourne Spring Carnival campaign.

Niblick has not raced since March when he delivered Cavanough his first hometown feature in the most dramatic circumstances after winning the race on protest.

Cavanough said ideally Niblick would race over the Melbourne carnival or if he failed to measure up, target some of the lucrative country cups over the spring.

“Niblick has been back in work for about five weeks,” Cavanough said.

“He is a 100-rater so he is probably a fringe player down Melbourne over the spring carnival if he comes up this preparation.

“If he struggles there we will look at targeting some of the country cups where he will probably have to lump 59 or 60 kilograms.”

Cavanough said he was still weighing up where Niblick would kick-start his spring campaign.

“I haven’t really looked that far ahead but there is a couple of nice seven furlong races at Caulfield and Flemington in early September that we could target,” he said.

“He is the type of horse once you get him ready it’s just a matter of picking a race. But I don’t really have a grand plan at the moment.”

Niblick is undefeated in two starts for the Cavanough stable.

The six-year-old defeated a strong field first-up in the $101,500 Listed National Sprint at Canberra over 1400 metres in early March.

Niblick then stepped-up to the 2000 metres and claim the $170,00 Listed Albury Gold Cup and his biggest race success.

Cavanough said he was unsure where stablemate Price Of Glory would start next after bouncing back to winning form with a win over 1600-metres at Corowa on Monday.

Price Of Glory proved he had a bright future after running fourth in Albury Gold Cup and midfield in Wagga Gold Cup.

“He hit a bit of a flat spot in his training after the Wagga Cup,” he said.

“He then went to Seymour after a bit of a freshen-up where he went pretty ordinary.

“So I thought I would drop him down in grade and run him over a mile and he bounced back to form at Corowa.

“He will probably have a couple of more runs before having a decent spell over the spring.

“The owners are once again keen to target the Albury Cup so he will come back after the spring and be wound up and ready to go at Albury.”
