Men injured as car slams into power pole in Travancore, Melbourne - Herald Sun

PEAK-HOUR motorists are experiencing heavy delays after a car slammed into a power pole in Melbourne's innerwest last night.

A man is in a critical condition and two others are badly injured after the accident in Travancore, just after 3am.

The city-bound CityLink entrance on Mt Alexander Rd remains closed, and there are also closures at Boundary Rd and Racecourse Rd, and Flemington Rd and Racecourse Rd.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the driver appeared to have lost control of his sedan on Mt Alexander Rd.

The vehicle carrying five men believed to be aged in their 20s hit a concrete bridge, crossed tram tracks and then struck a power pole.

Both the driver and the front seat passenger were trapped in the car and had to be cut out by rescue crews.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Susannah Hicks said the driver was unconscious when paramedics arrived.

He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition, while the front seat passenger was also taken to hospital in a serious condition, having suffered a suspected broken collarbone and other internal injuries.

A third passenger went to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition.

Ms Batty said police were investigating if speed was a factor in the smash.

Police are calling for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
