HIT musical Matilda is heading to Melbourne in September 2015.

The musical, written by Australia's Tim Minchin, will open in Melbourne first, most likely at Her Majesty's Theatre.

UK producers, the Royal Shakespeare Company, will be joined by Australia's Louise Withers for the big Australian tour.

The show has been the toast of the West End since it transferred there in October 2011 from a sellout in Stratford-Upon-Avon in November 2010. It is booked until December.

It is enjoying similar triumph in New York with sellout shows every day since opening in April.

Winning hosts of awards in London and four Tonys in New York, the show promises to be a hit in Melbourne. It is based on Roald Dahl's novel of the same name and is about a girl who dreams of a better life.

While unloved by her parents, the witty and clever Matilda impresses her schoolteacher and, over the course of her first term at school, teacher and pupil have a profound effect on each other's lives.
