Detectives in Melbourne have seized a car linked to a gangland killing from nearly a decade ago.
Graham "The Munster" Kinniburgh was ambushed and shot dead after he parked his car and was walking up to his house in Kew, in the city's inner east, in December 2003.
The 63-year-old had been implicated in the 1998 murder of Alphonse Gangitano, which ignited Melbourne's bloody gangland war that left up to 25 people dead.
Police never solved Kinniburgh's murder and have been searching for his killer's getaway car ever since.
The breakthrough came on Tuesday when they finally found the dark blue 1999 Hyundai Excel sedan at a rural property in Alexandra, about 130km northeast of Melbourne.
Police say the car is also linked to the 2004 disappearance of Terrance Blewitt in Melton.
Blewitt, then 53, had links with underworld figures and is presumed dead.
"It is hoped forensic analysis of the vehicle will provide answers for police and Mr Blewitt's family, as well as vital information in relation to the murder of Graham Kinniburgh," police spokeswoman Cath Allen said.
"The current owner of the vehicle has no connection to either incident and purchased the car some time after these events."
Police have also announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of whoever is responsible for Kinniburgh's death.
Underworld hitman Andrew "Benji" Veniamin, the best mate of gangland killer Carl Williams, has previously been investigated as the gunman in the Kinniburgh shooting, but he too was killed in 2004.
