LE Roi passed some crucial qualifying clauses for next year's Caulfield and Melbourne Cups with an impressive win in the Group 3 $125,000 Summer Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens today.
Trainer Tony McEvoy's decision to target the Summer Cup with the former German stayer paid off handsomely when he powered home to score by three-quarters of a length from Brightest with Praecido third.
Le Roi improved his record to five wins from just eight starts including his last four in succession and McEvoy is already considering a Cups preparation for the stayer next spring.
"It ticks a few boxes winning this race," McEvoy said.
"He has passed the 2400m clause and the Group 3 clause - it doesn't qualify you for everything but it helps."
In-form jockey Glyn Schofield endorsed McEvoy's plan to aim Le Roi at the Melbourne Cup.
"He's a super horse, really," Schofield said.
"For a horse that stays well and has only had a handful of starts, it was a very good win.
"Tony knows what he has got in this horse and he is in for exciting times ahead."
McEvoy said Le Roi would be given a brief let-up before being given a light autumn preparation, most likely in Sydney.
"The tracks can get very firm in Melbourne over autumn and I want to avoid that with this horse," the trainer added.
