Brevard County Fire Rescue is investigating a natural gas leak that caused what residents thought was an explosion Wednesday morning in Melbourne.
The natural gas transmission line failed off of Simon Road, just south of US 192 near Interstate 95. Deputies said the cap or valve that failed caused the noise that residents heard.
Gas is escaping and some residents voluntarily evacuated, but evacuations aren't required, according to deputies.
The hazardous materials crew is on scene. Deputies said no residents are in danger.
