Around 30 people were evacuated from a Port Melbourne street after fire engulfed a townhouse at about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

South Melbourne police Acting Sergeant Nitsa Tsilfidis said the fire, which is not being treated as suspicious, started in a two-storey Stokes Street apartment before it spread through the walls to adjoining units.

An MFB spokeswoman said the blaze took 25 firefighters 40 minutes to bring under control, with all occupants of the apartment and neighbouring homes evacuated as a precautionary measure.
