A TRAFFIC-busting helicopter service between the city and Melbourne Airport is beginning to soar.

Air Melbourne began offering Heli-Express flights between South Wharf and the airport last December.

And from Wednesday, for $274 one-way, commuters will be able to fly the 12 minutes between Moorabbin Airport and Tullamarine.

Air Melbourne’s John Borg said the service’s popularity had been growing despite the cost.

“We have all types of people jumping on the service,” he said.

“If you work out all the costs involved in getting a cab or driving your own car, all the related charges and time you spend on the road, it’s fairly quick and only marginally more expensive.”

Mr Borg said the Moorabbin Airport flights would appeal to business people living in the city’s south-east corridor.

“You need 90 minutes easily on the road heading to the airport in the morning, as opposed to 12 minutes in the helicopter to get there,” he said.

Heli-Express runs from sunrise to sunset and includes valet driver transfer to departure terminals at Melbourne Airport in a Mercedes Benz.

The company has three Agusta eight-seater 109 helicopters, and has plans to start flights from Lilydale Airport.
