Melbourne’s lucky office drones have just been given a much more attractive lunch break option to scrolling Facebook and dropping crumbs into their keyboards. The Toff in Town on Swanston St kicked off its Lunch Beat sessions this Tuesday – a free hour-long rave-up of dance and pop classics – with a launch party that was hilariously covered by Channel 9’s Today.

Reporter Justine Mackenzie stopped by “what the ‘cool kids’ are calling Lunch Beat” for an awkward dance and a chat with some of the office-attired workers throwing serious midday shapes on the dancefloor. “This is the best work break I’ve ever had, by far!” enthuses one punter. “It’s amazing to see so many people here without drinking, without anything, just here to dance,” says another, while a third grinning interviewee’s only comment is, “What? I can’t hear you.”

Lunch Beat began in 2010 in Sweden, the country responsible for other such work/life-balance-improving ideas as the six hour work day. From humble beginnings in a Stockholm garage, the idea of lunch break clubbing has since spread to 55 cities around the world, from New York and Paris to Portugal and Kuwait. The idea, according to the Lunch Beat website , is that dedicating “one hour to day time dancing [encourages] playfulness, participation & community… A physical knowledge that will make you create magic during the rest of your day.”

The Toff in Town’s Lunch Beat sessions will happen from midday to 1pm every Tuesday in May – the only rule is “If It’s Your First Time at Lunch Beat, You Have To Dance.” You can watch Today’s (highly amusing) Lunch Beat segment below.
