A 29-YEAR-OLD IRISHMAN has been found dead in Australia, just one day after pleading guilty to causing €300,000 worth of damage to a Melbourne hotel.
Padraig Gaffney, originally from Longford, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to turning on a fire hydrant in the Fraser Place Hotel last year, causing the damage.
He had said that the incident had “ruined his life”.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is providing consular assistance to his family, but could not confirm the circumstances of the death.
In court on Tuesday, Gaffney pleaded guilty to criminal damage and was fined AU$10,000.
The judge in the case said that while there had been catastrophic consequences of Gaffney’s actions, he could not see “where the evil lay” in what he had done.
