SHOCKING images have been released of the horrific squalor that fatally entrapped a young boy.
The boy, aged 5, had never seen a doctor or been to school, living a hermit-like existence at his family’s filthy home in suburban Melbourne.
Police say the tragic boy cut his foot in the rodent infested home and was found dead in his bedroom three days later.
He was rushed to an ambulance branch by his mother, but couldn’t be saved.
Police later described the home as having debris and rubbish throughout every room, and being infested with rodents.
They said rotten food, mould, faeces, broken furniture and household items were strewed around the home that had a foul odour.
Neighbours also allegedly reported the family to authorities and regularly saw the boy, and his brother, locked outside of the home.
Neighbours had allegedly urged police to intervene after they heard his mother threaten to break his arms and legs and run him over with a car.
In a brief of evidence prepared for the court the mum admitted to police her family had been living in “sheer and utter filth”.
The boy’s 41-year-old mother made the admission to police during an interview following her son’s death in August, 2012.
Awful details of the two boys’ lives have emerged at the Melbourne Magistrates Court this week.
Extended family members have told police that on the occasions they saw they boy he was withdrawn and couldn’t communicate properly.
Court documents and images were released to the Herald Sun on Thursday, revealing the boy was not registered at birth and had not been immunised.
He had routine check-ups by maternal health nurses at birth, and never saw a medical practitioner again.
Photos tendered to the court show the disgusting living conditions at the house, which the mum described to police as a “hovel”.
One neighbour who lived close to the famil told the Herald Sun police attended the house before and after the little boy died.
“They were a weird couple,” the neighbour said.
“You would see the children naked running around in the street outside the house - even in the middle of winter.
“The house always smelt and the backyard was really dirty.
“It just wasn’t normal. As a neighbour I always felt really sorry for the children but what can you do.”
The boy’s mum has pleaded guilty to two charges of reckless conduct endangering serious injury.
She has also pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to register the birth of a child.
She has been ordered to appear before the County Court in June.
The boy’s father is expected to return to court next month.
He is on bail.
