Up to 4000 litres of aviation fuel leaked from a damaged pipeline running alongside railway lines in Melbourne’s west on Sunday afternoon.

Up to 30 firefighters responded to the spill near Anderson Road, Sunshine at about 1.30pm.

The spill caused rail disruptions, with passengers moved onto replacement bus services.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said between 1000 and 4000 litres of aviation fuel had leaked from the damaged pipeline.

She said firefighters arrived within minutes and worked to isolate the fuel leak and blanket the spill in foam.

She said the spill was under control in 50 minutes.

Exxon Mobil representatives were at the scene and an Environment Protection Authority representative also attended.

A VLine spokesman said the fuel spill affected two services on the Bendigo line, with regular service resuming at 2.30pm.

MFB firefighters will remain at the scene until a vacuum truck has finished removing the spilt fuel.
