Around this time last year we first caught a glimpse of the work of talented photographer and Melbourne IT worker Ben Thomas, 31, who gained attention for his incredible tilt shift images of cities around the world.
Thomas is back with more photographs and this time he's focused on his beloved Melbourne.

Now with a new camera and lenses he's gone right back to basics and tried to fine tune the technique from the ground up: "I am shooting in both digital and film now which has brought about a new set of challenges both technically and from a logistics point of view".

Previously Thomas stayed close to the ground to capture his dramatic images but this time the sky was the limit, spending most of his time in a helicopter to get the best possible view.
"I spent a lot of time researching to create a flight plan to capture the most strikingly beautiful locations of Melbourne."

"Both the famous and not so recognised. A great example is the docks in Footscray, the containers and infrastructure are an amazing collection of shapes, patterns and colour when looked at from the sky. I worked with a fantastic helicopter pilot in Melbourne to head up over the city, doors open and strapped in."

Thomas is set to release his first book of images in March
"The interest and response even in this pre-release stage has blown me away with a number of new projects kicking off. Its going to be a really exciting and busy 2014".

When attempting to capture his city Thomas says: "I always start with looking for a beautiful image. It just so happens that my choice in how and where I shoot from tends to lend itself to alternate views."

"Were all super busy these days, it can be easy to miss the magnificent architecture, shapes and patterns that in essence are the fingerprint of the cities we live in."
