A Melbourne grandmother remains missing in the typhoon-ravaged Philippines — and her family is desperate to find her.

Reina Salvo Nelson, 58, had been holidaying in the coastal town of Carigara and had been due to go to Tacloban on her way back to Melbourne, News Ltd

reports.

But the Wyndham Vale woman failed to arrive back in Melbourne on Monday and the last time she contacted relatives was last Thursday.

Ms Nelson at the time said she would be staying at her sister's house during the storm, but no word has been heard since.

Super Typhoon Haiyan smashed into the Philippines' central islands the following day, killing as many as 10,000 and making 673,000 made homeless.

Ms Nelson's six children are now very worried for safety, spending sleepless nights searching for answers online and through news reports.

"We don't know what to think, we're just worried,'' daughter Mary Stewart was quoted as saying.

"If there is no power, no transport, no water, what has she got?''

There are also fears for Ms Nelson's sister, Francis Salvo, on holidays from Werribee and visiting family in Carigara.

Ms Stewart said she hoped her mother did not travel to Tacloban, which was hit hard by the typhoon.

Australian consular officials in the Philippines and Canberra are still following up on the whereabouts of Australians missing in the Philippines, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says.

The Australian government has pledged $10 million to the international emergency aid effort, including a team of medics set to leave for the Philippines today.
