A Melbourne rapper who wrote about life on the run has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty in court to an armed car-jacking and attempting to rob a post office.

Corinthian Morgan, who performs under the name Mr Morgz, lifted his shirt to reveal a sawn-off shotgun tucked into his shorts to two people in a car in Dalgety Street, Preston on January 7, according to documents tendered to Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

He then told the pair in the car to get out before he drove it to Reservoir, where he abandoned it and took $80 from a handbag left in the car.

That same day, Morgan tried to rob a post office in Elizabeth Street, Coburg North, when, wearing a bandanna over his face, he pointed the gun at the man behind the counter and said he wanted to withdraw cash, the documents say.

But Morgan left empty-handed after the man pushed the gun away from him, and the man's wife pressed the alarm button.

Morgan, 28, whose debut album was titled Life on the Run and is shown leaving jail in a film clip accompanying one of his songs, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, handling stolen goods and two counts of possessing a firearm.

The court documents say Morgan traded a stolen car with his cousin, in exchange for another vehicle, on December 31 last year.

Morgan handed himself in to police 12 days after he robbed the car and tried to rob the post office.

He later told police he was using the drug ice at the time and could not recall what had happened, the documents say.

Prosecutor Julian Ayres told the court that only five of the 26 original charges laid against Morgan would proceed.

Magistrate Steven Raleigh remanded Morgan in custody to appear at a plea hearing at the County Court on October 10.
