FROM the timeless Block Arcade to the controversial Federation Square to the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Some of our best-known Melburnians rate their favourite Melbourne buildings in this picture special, exclusive to the Herald Sun.
FLINDERS STREET STATION
SAM NEWTON
My Kitchen Rules contestant
Nothing says “Melbourne” more than Flinders Street Station.
SETH SENTRY
Hip hop artist
It's just so iconic and impressive looking. Plus I like to wonder what's going on in all the upstairs rooms. I'd love to poke around there one day.
DYLAN ADDISON
AFL player for the Western Bulldogs
I like Flinders Street Station because of what it represents - it’s Australia’s oldest station and an iconic landmark of the state.
FEDERATION SQUARE
ROBBIE KEARNS
Former Melbourne Storm captain and club ambassador
I love Federation Square. I think it’s a very unique development that seems to be the central hub of Melbourne.
No matter what day of the week it is, it’s always buzzing with a great atmosphere.
SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE
XAVIER ELLIS
AFL player for Hawthorn
I like the Shrine of Remembrance. My grandfather died not long after the war, so for me it is a nice building with a lot of meaning attached to it.
Everyone respects the area, it is surrounded by beautiful gardens and the building is a good reminder of what people have lost.
THE MCG
PETER SIDDLE
Australian cricketer
I love the MCG - it's my home ground. It's our own colosseum for sport, and when packed, it is the best place to play and watch sport.
JOHN HASTINGS
Australian cricketer
My favourite building in Melbourne would have to be the MCG. It’s such a great stadium for any type of event and is a real hub of Melbourne.
There have been so many great sporting memories there, and whether it is the Boxing Day Test or more than 80,000 attending an AFL match, there have been so many great events for both participants and fans.
ADAM ZWAR
Actor
I’ve been to the “G” when it’s been empty and as a sports fan it’s very moving.
A lot of energy bounces off the stands and you can’t help but think of Bradman, Bodyline, Betty Cuthbert, the Socceroos going down to Iran in 1997 and, of course, 16 Carlton premierships. I know, most of you were with me till that last bit.
ROYAL EXHIBITION BUILDING
PETER MITCHELL
Seven News presenter
I can’t go past the Royal Exhibition Building as my favourite building. For the first time, I was recently inside when it was empty and I was completely blown away.
Aside from its historical significance for the opening of Australia’s first federal parliament, it will become a fantastic attraction when the original promenade around its dome is completed in a few years.
ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
TEGAN CALDWELL
Melbourne Vixens goal attack
St Paul’s Cathedral is one of Melbourne's oldest buildings and is visually stunning all round.
THE FORUM
REBECCA MADDERN
Seven News presenter
The Forum Theatre is my favourite building. Every detail inside and out is so intricate and elaborate.
The copper dome is just brilliant, and I love that amongst the surrounding buildings the architecture looks so odd but at the same time absolutely right.
OWL EYES
Singer/songwriter (aka Brooke Addamo)
I love the Forum Theatre in Melbourne. It’s such a dream of mine to play.
I love watching music in that venue the beautiful statues and detail really add to the theatre of it all.
I really enjoyed White Night in Melbourne this year - getting to see pictures projected onto some of my favourite buildings in Melbourne was truly breathtaking.
ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
DANIEL ANDREWS
Victorian opposition leader
My favourite building in Melbourne is the Royal Children's Hospital. It belongs to all Victorians and is the best children's hospital in the world.
THE WINDSOR HOTEL
PIA MIRANDA
Actor
I love the Windsor Hotel. It is beautiful, grand and has so much history attached to it. I love the foyer and staying there is always a treat.
THE ARTS CENTRE
ADALITA
Musician and Magic Dirt singer
I really like the Arts Centre spire. To me it symbolises art and the desire to accurately convey one’s experiences.
It also helps that it looks a bit like the Eiffel Tower.
MANCHESTER UNITY
HELEN KAPALOS
Today Tonight host
I love the Manchester Unity building – the architecture is sublime. I never get tired of looking at it.
MARK SEYMOUR
Musician and Hunters & Collectors frontman
I'd probably pick the Manchester Unity building on the corner of Collins and Swanston for its sheer elegance.
OLD HERALD SUN BUILDING
GEORGE CALOMBARIS
Chef and Masterchef host
I love the old Herald and Weekly Times building of course (now home of Calombaris’s Press Club restaurant).
It’s got so much history and meaning – the first print rooms in Victoria. If only the walls could speak.
THE BLOCK ARCADE
KERRY GREENWOOD
Author
The Block Arcade – made with the same care and attention to detail as the cathedral and by the same builders.
You can buy a stylish hat and, in my case, visit the Hopetoun Tea Rooms and eat ribbon sandwiches such as Phryne (Fisher, from her Phryne Fisher mystery novels) would have ordered.
It is changeless, utterly civilised and decorative, with the inhabited lanes, now like a small village.
CATHEDRAL ARCADE
JO STANLEY
Radio presenter on Fox FM’s The Matt and Jo Show
For interior the Cathedral Arcade on Swanston St is my favourite building in Melbourne – it’s where my milliner’s office is.
The foyer is the most special example of art deco in Melbourne, with stunning stain glass window ceilings. It has two original old elevators that until not too long ago had elevator attendants.
It houses artists, milliners, jewellers, so it has an artisan culture.
ANZ BUILDING
BEVERLEY O’CONNOR
Herald Sun columnist and ABC TV presenter
I like the ANZ building in Queen Street. I love its gothic tudor style. It is a landmark building that has stood the test of time.
GPO BUILDING
REBECCA JUDD
Model and TV presenter
I like the GPO Building – I like the size and scale of the columns at the front and I love the high ceilings inside where you can see the retailers on the mezzanine.
While it is an old building there is a modern element with the use of glass and lighting inside.
THE STATE LIBRARY
JEFF KENNETT
Former Victorian Premier and Beyond Blue chairman
I like the State Library and the reading dome for what it represents – light shining on learning!
RYAN SHELTON
Comedian and radio and TV presenter
Although I’ve probably only been inside about 10 times in my life, the domed reading room in the State Library is incredible. Not only because of the design and the history but also because of what it holds – so many books about so many things.
Libraries are amazing places like that.
NATIONAL GALLERY OF VICTORIA
DECLAN MELIA
British India frontman
I like the NGV – it’s not as gaudy as Fed Square or as pompous as any of the theatres or parliament. Aesthetically it's quite cold and functional but inside it has a cathedral quality.
You could be anywhere on Bourke St or in the gardens but the NGV is more unique to us, it's a good example of modern architecture that hasn't dated poorly, that comes from choosing classicism over being ostentatious.
THE PALAIS THEATRE
BRIAN NANKERVIS
Writer, producer and RocKwiz co-host
It's hard to pick one building, but I'm choosing the beautiful, historic Palais Theatre in St Kilda as my favourite.
I've seen Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith and Bonnie Raitt there, acted in a pantomine called Hey Hey It's Cinderella, performed in several RocKwiz Live shows and helped produce five annual concerts there called The Heart Of St Kilda, raising money for St Kilda's Sacred Heart Mission.
NICHOLAS BUILDING
MISSY HIGGINS
Singer
I love the Nicholas Building at the intersection of Swanston St and Flinders Lane in the CBD. Whenever I have a friend staying from interstate I take them there.
We ride up in the ancient elevator manned by a lift attendant who's worked in it for over 40 years (and has completely taken over the interior of it, lining the walls with and trinkets and random memorabilia and faded photos of dogs - it's amazing) up to the artist studios, haberdashery and jewellery shops and just potter around feeling as though we're the only ones who know it exists.
