Finch key to Melbourne's NRL charge - Ninemsn

Not being able to break into the Melbourne Storm side could end up being the best thing that has happened to Brett Finch's NRL career.

Finch has moved from back-up to a starring role in the Storm's charge to the NRL finals following regular five-eighth Gareth Widdop's dislocated hip.

Finch, who last played for the Storm in 2010, returned from two years with UK club Wigan to cover for such an injury crisis.

He admits his relegation to the NSW Cup early this season stung but the lack of wear and tear from NRL minutes could actually be a blessing.

"It's a huge step up from the NSW Cup so I could certainly see that as a bonus," he said.

"My head got a few whacks but the body's not too bad so hopefully it's a positive.

The 31-year-old will line up against another "golden oldie" in Scott Prince against Brisbane at AAMI Park on Friday night.

Finch and halfback Cooper Cronk haven't been able to spend much time renewing their partnership because of Cronk's Origin workload, but he felt their playing history would count for a lot.

"I'd like to think I can do the job," Finch said.

"I'm a lot different to Gaz; I'm nearly 10 years older than him so I don't move as quick but I'll bring some of my own strengths to the game."

Widdop said on Thursday that he'd been able to avoid surgery and was straight into rehab, but was still unlikely to play again this season.

Finch is unsure of his plans for 2014 but doesn't want to stand in the way of a up-and-coming half such as Ben Hampton or Kurt Mann.

He felt Hampton had the "x-factor" to be a long-term success.

Finch believed the remainder of this season would guide both him and the club.

"I don't even know if they want me or how I feel."

While the Storm are looking to end a two-game losing run, the Broncos have plenty on the line after falling outside the top eight.

"It's a big game whenever you play Brisbane," Finch said.

"There's plenty of Queensland Origin players up against each other.

"Brisbane need a win and we certainly do to get back in the top two and that certainly adds to it."
