A NEW domestic terminal at Melbourne Airport capable of handling up to 10 million passengers a year has been approved by the federal government.
The $400 million first stage of the airport's long-term southern precinct project is due to open in mid-2015, and will include new aircraft parking bays, extra car parking spots and connecting road upgrades.
Approving the development on Tuesday, federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said the terminal would help the airport deal with an expected doubling of its annual number of passengers to 64 million by 2033.
"The new domestic terminal will help meet the growing demand for air travel in Victoria and Australia," he said in a statement.
The works will focus on the area south of terminal 3 and around terminal 4, Mr Albanese said.
