DEFYING this month's near-collapse of Europe's carbon credit scheme, a Melbourne-based renewable energy company today will sign a deal with the Irish government to install a prototype hybrid wave and wind power generator off the country's west coast.
The private Marine Power Technologies plans to spend about $26 million to commercialise its so-called Energy Islands, which combine a wind turbine with six oscillating water columns. MPT's plan is to install a 5MW prototype 2km off the coast of Belmullet, in County Mayo.
