Melbourne manhunt continues for sex assault offender - 9news.com.au

Victorian police are appealing to witnesses after a woman was sexually assaulted while trying to walk home after a night out.

The 21-year-old woman had been at the Orange Whip nightclub in Ringwood in Melbourne’s east before a friend drove her to her mother’s house in Montrose.

Upon discovering no one was home, the woman made the decision to walk 3km to her own house in Mt Evelyn.

As she made her way along the Swansea Road walking track sometime between 2am and 4am, police believe she was attacked.

“As a result of that assault she's suffered some minor injuries, but as you'd expect she's quite distraught,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

“After the attacker fled it's believed the victim tried to call triple zero but her mobile phone battery went flat.

“She had to wait until she was able to wave down a passing motorist to get help".

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad and SES volunteers scoured more than 250m of dense bushland beside the track, collecting items of clothing as evidence today.

Police are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the attack.

India Bowling Hopeless, Melbourne Win Impossible: Sunil Gavaskar - NDTVSports.com

A dejected Sunil Gavaskar called India's bowling performance in the ongoing third Test in Melbourne as "hopeless." Australia, finished their first innings at 530 after being 216 for five at one stage. Skipper Steven Smith scored a glorious 192. India were 108 for one at stumps on Day 3 on Saturday.(Report | Blog | Scorecard)

"India's bowling was hopeless as they never looked like taking wickets. Whatever wickets they got were gifted to them and not earned," Gavaskar told NDTV.(Ashwin Confident India Can Bounce Back)

Australia resumed at their overnight score of 259 for 5. Yet again, the middle and lower middle order made healthy contributions as Smith, Brad Haddin (55) and Ryan Harris (74) powered the hosts past the 500-run mark.(Smith Can do no Wrong)

"I didn't have any expectations that India could restrict Australia. I had hopes but no realistic expectation," said the 65-year-old Gavaskar.(Warner Fails to Field)

The angry former Test opener was unhappy that the last four Australian wickets plundered 204 runs. Gavaskar suggested that the selectors could try looking at a new set of bowlers as the current lot were not improving while playing away from home.(Dhoni Sets New Record)

"The solution is to look at another set of bowlers, they can't do any worse than the current lot," Gavaskar said.

On being asked if India had any chance of coming back and winning the game, the former skipper preferred not to get carried away.

"You have to be an absolute optimist to believe that India can come back in the match. India have lost out on a golden opportunity to win a Test series in Australia," he added. India are already down 2-0 in the four-Test series.

The only positive Gavaskar highlighted was Murali Vijay's batting. The opener now has four scores over fifty in five innings. He batting on 55 when stumps were drawn with India trailing by 422 runs.

"Murali Vijay's shot selection is admirable as is his patience. One half of the opening problem has been solved," said Gavaskar. Shikhar Dhawan, who opened the innings, was out for 28. Cheteshwar Pujara was batting on 25.

Not happy ... Passengers were promised direct flights to Bali. Source: Supplied

BUDGET airline AirAsia X has angered passengers and thrown plans into chaos after cancelling direct flights from Melbourne to Bali and giving flyers only a day’s notice.

The Malaysian carrier failed to gain approval from Australian and Indonesian aviation bodies for the new route, which was due to start on Boxing Day.

The news was broken to passengers via text message on Christmas Day, Fairfax reports.

Instead of flying customers directly from Melbourne to Bali, the flights will instead go via Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia — adding at seven hours to the six-hour journey.

The reshuffle meant some travellers would arrive in Bali a day later than originally planned, forcing some to miss family weddings and waste costly hotel bookings.

The airline had been heavily advertising the direct route, but a spokesman said the approval process encountered an “unforeseen delay”.

It is not known how many passengers are affected by the stuff-around, but Julie Chumbley was among the irate holiday makers to blast the airline on social media.

“Thankyou for wrecking our family Christmas and my daughters wedding (sic),” she wrote.

She explained that her son was supposed to walk her daughter down the aisle, but the detour to Malaysia meant he would miss the ceremony.

“Advertising was fierce for sucking Australian consumers into thinking that you would really be flying Melbourne to Bali direct from 26/12!” she wrote.

Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets: A-League live scores, blog - The Roar

Melbourne Victory are strong favourites to win against Newcastle Jets at home this week, but if history between these two sides is anything to go by, then it won’t be an easy three points for Melbourne tonight. Join The Roar from 7:45pm AEDT for full live blog coverage.

Whenever these two teams meet, no matter the form either is in, the contest is always an exhilarating one, and it is often very difficult to separate the two sides. So far in 2014, Victory have played Newcastle three times, and in all three encounters the scores have been locked at full-time, and all have been score draws.

Newcastle’s horrible 14-15 campaign seemed to have finally taken a turn last week when the Jets outplayed Adelaide United for large patches of the match, and deservedly won the game 2-1 thanks to a late Jeronimo Newmann strike.

Though most impressively for the Jets was Phil Stubbins’ tinkering with his tactics to ensure that Newcastle had the right answer to the Reds’ free-flowing, possession-aggressive style of football.

Stubbins played with a back three – Madaschi at the centre with Neville and Welsh either side – and two wing backs, allowing more freedom further up the park for Griffiths and Carney, but it was the impressive displays from young defenders’ Hoole and Virgili that stole the show and gave the Jets’ the edge they needed against arguably the best side in the competition.

Caravella was also instrumental in midfield, creating space out of nowhere with good positioning and spatial awareness.

Melbourne Victory, on the other hand, head into the match in a season slump, as they come off their first defeat of the season, and a 3-3 draw with Sydney prior to that.

While this may not seem like a crisis; the current position they’re in is not ideal for Premiership contenders, with Perth surging ahead six points clear after Round 11.

And to make matters worse, Melbourne will be missing captain Mark Milligan and defender Matthieu Delpierre, both of whom are key players in midfield and defence respectively.

While Victory have more than enough depth to deal with the absentees, Kevin Muscat will be looking to gain maximum points from this outing to ensure Perth aren’t too far gone at the top of the table before New Years, and without two key players, they will be lacking a certain edge.

Victory seems to be heavily reliant upon Gui Finkler in the creative midfield position. Without the gifted playmaker, Melbourne has lacked inspiration in the attacking half, despite boasting the likes of Berisha and Barbarouses in the front third.

Victory’s chances of defeating Newcastle may rest with Gui, especially as the Jets begin to come to life this season, though whether Gui starts or not is a chance that Muscat may not want to take.

For Newcastle, their best chances of winning seems to depend more on defence than attack. With 17 goals conceded in second halves this season, Phil Stubbins will look to bolster his defence against an extremely strong Melbourne front-line.

The Jets have no issues in attack, with the likes of Griffiths, Carney, Hoole and Montano all combining well, so while coming in second favourites to win, they will have a chance if the backline can hold out for 90 minutes.

Prediction:

Melbourne to edge this one, but it will be close. 3-2 to Victory.

Boy, 15, 'caught driving at 220kph' in Mulgrave, Melbourne - ABC Online

Updated December 27, 2014 14:58:22

A 15-year-old boy has been caught allegedly driving at almost three times the speed limit in Mulgrave, in Melbourne's south-east.

Police said they recorded the boy driving at 220 kilometres per hour (kph) in an 80 kph zone on the Princes Highway at 2:15am (AEDT).

When officers stopped the car they found six passengers, aged between 15 and 17, inside and four of them were not wearing seatbelts.

The car caught police attention when one of passengers yelled abuse out the window towards a parked police patrol car.

Officers then followed the car and allegedly clocked the car being driven at more than 200 kph.

The car slowed when officers activated their lights, before pulling over in Peters Avenue, police said.

The teenage driver from Hampton Park was released pending summons.

He is expected to be charged with traffic offences including excessive speed, conduct endangering life, and unlicensed driving.

The registered owner of the car, a 17-year-old from Pakenham, was one of the unrestrained passengers, police said.

The car has been impounded for 30 days, and the owner will have to pay more than $700 to have it returned.
