Police have seized millions of dollars worth of drugs in raids across Melbourne as part of an investigation into an alleged international heroin trafficking ring.

The raids were carried out by Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police detectives at 15 locations across the city.

Seven people were arrested and $6 million worth of drugs believed to be heroin and ecstasy were found.

Victoria's Assistant Police Commissioner Steve Fontana said the raids were the culmination of a five-month investigation into what is believed to be an international drug syndicate.

"Not only have we shut down a major international drug distribution and trafficking syndicate, we will have significantly affected, we believe, the accessibility of heroin on the street in Melbourne and the subsequent crime which results from it," Mr Fontana said.

Police said the "longstanding organised crime syndicate" had also been targetting New Zealand, where raids were also conducted today.

A 53-year-old Auckland man was arrested.

The men in custody are expected to be charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of heroin and will appear in court later on Wednesday.
