In only his tenth start, German-bred Protectionist has claimed his first victory in the Melbourne Cup this afternoon.
The win, in front of around 100,000 punters at Flemington, was the quickest time since Media Puzzle in 2002 and delivered Germany's first cup win.
It was a close race until about 150m out when the five-year-old out-sprinted the rest of the field, coming home around five metres clear of second place Red Cadeaux.
Protectionist's superstar sire, Monsun, also gave us last year's Melbourne cup winner, Fiorente. He becomes the fifth northern hemisphere-trained horse to win the race since Vintage Crop scored in 1993.
Red Cadeaux finished runner-up for a third time in four starts in the Melbourne Cup, while New Zealand hopeful Who Shot Thebarman came in third.
Protectionist is trained by Andreas Wohler and was ridden by Ryan Moore, the English jockey who won the Cox Plate on Irish galloper Adelaide.
"He's won very easy, that's a very good horse," Moore said.
"Obviously it's very special."
Pre-race favourite Admire Rakti, who finished last, collapsed after the Melbourne Cup and died.
