Melbourne to host Real Madrid, Man City - reports - Goal.com

The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground could be the venue for some mouth-watering clashes involving some of the biggest teams and players in the world next year

Some of world football's biggest players and clubs are reportedly set to head to Melbourne next year as part of the Australian leg of the International Champions Cup.

The Herald Sun newspaper claims Spanish giants Real Madrid, English Premier League champions Manchester City and Italian club Inter Milan are believed to be due to take part in the third edition of the pre-season tournament, to be held Down Under.

If the event gets the go-ahead it means the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure will be on Australian shores for matches between July 18-24.

It's believed the Victorian State government are kicking in AU$10 million to help bring the heavyweights of world football to these shores.

Given the success of Liverpool’s visit to Melbourne last year – with more than 95,000 fans packing the MCG – organisers are confident of huge crowds to see some of the world’s best players.

With the tournament being staged just a few weeks before their respective European leagues begin, it should ensure each club brings close to their full squad.

If the tournament does go ahead it promises to be a huge month for football in Australia right in the middle of the AFL season in Victoria.

The annual A-League All Stars clash will also be played in Sydney – with Premier League club Arsenal reportedly a target – while the Queensland Government is apparently still trying to convince Liverpool to play at Suncorp Stadium.
