THERE’LL be no room at the inn next weekend when 70,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses flood into Melbourne.

In what is a traditionally quiet period between the AFL Grand Final and the peak of the Spring Racing Carnival, the city’s hotels have been flooded with bookings and prices for remaining rooms are skyrocketing.

Thousands of interstate and overseas visitors are also arriving for the Caulfield Cup, the Melbourne Festival and the Special Olympics National Games.

Pilgrims from more than 60 countries will attend the three-day International Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which is tipped to break Etihad Stadium’s record of 70,000 — ironically held by the Catholic Jubilee Mass in 2000.

Virtually all hotels and apartments in Docklands are sold out for the weekend, with extra trains and trams scheduled to and from Southern Cross.

Most hostels are also fully booked. Spots remain in six-bed dorms at Russell St’s Space Hotel for $126 a night, about triple the average weekend rate.

Its only remaining twin rooms were priced at $449, up from $126.

A queen suite at the 5-star Stamford Plaza is $750 on Saturday 18 October, compared to $325 the previous Saturday.

Jehovah’s Witnesses spokesman Rod Spinks said people from all over the world had been planning to come for two years.
