STRONG winds with gusts of up to 100km/h are set to hit metropolitan Melbourne later tonight as the city continues to experience weather that even the bureau calls “bizarre”.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Scott Williams said the city been through “a bizarre sort of day” which began cooly, but had now reached 24 degrees with strong winds still expected in the coming hours.
Avalon had recorded wind gusts of up to 80km/h and Mt Hotham had winds of 91km/h.
The strong winds are likely to hit bayside suburbs and the Morning Peninsula hardest, Mr Williams said. While the build up has been slow, the winds were “still on track” and could yet cause some damage to parts of the city.
“A pretty strong front will come though at around 10pm and it has that potential to still get gusts in metropolitan areas of around 80-100 km/h,” he said.
The 3mm rain forecast earlier in the day to pelt the city, is now thought to result in isolated showers.
South Australia has already felt the affect of strong winds with gales of 83km/h measured at Cleve, on the central Eyre Peninsula this morning.
Winds have already brought down a large awning over the Cibo coffee shop in Waymouth St, Adelaide leaving it dangling by a thread.
The wild weather has also forced the cancellation of the final day of the South Australia’s Asiafest festival.
Earlier, Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Richard Russell said the temperature would drop up to 10 degrees when the cold front arrives in Melbourne about midnight.
He said the cold front followed two strong wind events in the past two week, with 102km/h winds at Melbourne Airport on September 28 and 87km/h winds last Tuesday.
“This is very typical weather for this time of the year,” he said.
“Being overnight, most people won’t notice the temperature drop, but they can expect to hear the squally winds.
“We have had at least two strong wind events over the past two weeks.
“This one won’t be quite as strong, but still strong so heed the warning.”
A top of 18C and a few showers is forecast for Tuesday, and 20C with showers on Wednesday.
