The victim of a drive-by shooting in Melbourne's north-west on Wednesday is hoping the bullet hole in his car was a case of mistaken identity.

It was the second shooting in the city within four hours, with police searching for a separate gunman who shot a woman in a factory in Sunshine West at 5am in an unrelated incident.

The first shooting was a drive-by on Melbourne Avenue, Glenroy, in which a man in his 40s was woken by the sound of gunshots outside his home at 1.40am.

He phoned police but said he didn't realise the shots were directed at his home until he left for work.
