Sydney filly Amicus has ended Hugh Bowman's frustrating run of second placings at Group 1 level at Caulfield by winning the $500,000 Thousand Guineas.

THE Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup have new favourites after a sensational day’s racing at Caulfield.

Lloyd Williams, who boasts four Melbourne Cups and a Caulfield Cup, now has the $4 favourite after Fawkner won the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

And international Protectionist, who finished fourth in an eye-catching run in the Herbert Power Stakes, has joined The Offer as the $10 favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

The joy continued to flow for Darren Weir — as will the beer for days to come — when he made it two Group 1 wins in three weeks when Trust In A Gust won the Toorak Handicap.

And Tony McEvoy has a Caulfield Cup runner for the first time in his own right after French import Big Memory won the Herbert Power to gain automatic entry into Saturday’s 2400m feature.

The day also belonged early to jockey Kerrin McEvoy, whose love affair with Caulfield continued with three consecutive winners.

But the news was not good for boom colt Rich Enuff, who lowered his colours in the $1 million Caulfield Guineas. He was far from disgraced when collared by Sydney raider Shooting To Win.

It was worse for the Peter Moody-trained Cox Plate fancy Dissident when the four-year-old bled in the Caulfield Stakes. He is out of the spring, courtesy of an automatic three month ban.

And father-son trainers Leon and Troy Corstens were fined $1500 for race day treatment of the front foot of Commanding Jewel, who ran 10th in the Toorak.

Sydneysiders have dominated the two three-year-old classics at Caulfield, with Shooting To Win running down red-hot favourite Rich Eruff in the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.

Fawkner’s win was a highlight as he took up his usual forward position before putting paid to a field that will be no stronger in the Cox Plate.

The eye-catching run came from ATC Derby winner Criterion, who firmed to $10 third favourite for the Plate.

Protectionist, trained by Germany’s Andreas Wohler, settled midfield and ran home strongly from 9th at the turn to finish fourth in the Herbert Power.

He looked in outstanding condition and bookmakers and the TAB immediately jumped upon his “upside” and made him joint favourite for the 3200m Cup at Flemington on November 4.

Lloyd Williams runner Fawkner has surged to outright $4 favourite for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate after winning the $400,000 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes.

French import Big Memory seized his place in Caulfield Cup, firming from $101 into $17 with Sportsbet, when he defied the Weir-trained Signoff, and a protest, to win the Herbert Power.

Undoubtedly, however, the biggest cheers of the day in mounting yard mayhem came after Trust In A Gust made it two Group 1 wins for Weir in the Toorak Handicap.

And the biggest hush came when gun three-year-old Rich Enuff was pipped in the Guineas, in much the same way punters reacted when Amicus won the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

In other highlights:

FORMER champion two-year-old filly Earthquake carried 59kg to win the Thoroughbred Stakes and trainer John O’Shea is considering sending her around with a light weight in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) against Lankan Rupee and Chatauqua at Moonee Valley on Friday week.

KERRIN McEvoy continued his love affair with Caulfield with three consecutive winners _ Earthquake in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes, Hosting (Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes) and Rubic in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes.
